The art of visual storytelling is why I fell in love with photography. Over the years, I have had the privilege of telling many stories - tales of love, marriage, travel, new life and family dynamics, culminating in a visual collection that is this blog. I invite and encourage you to get lost in these stories and delve into this visual narrative of life!

What’s not to love about engagement photos in Georgetown? From cute cobblestoned streets, brightly colored townhouses and cute cafes to waterfront sunsets, awesome views of the Key Bridge, and strolls along the Canal, the possibilities of where to take photos in Georgetown are endless. Both sunrise and sunset are gorgeous here, although the crowds tend to be lighter at sunrise. Dress up or dress down. Anything goes for this versatile engagement location!

Meadowlark Botanical Gardens

See more from Meadowlark Gardens

This hidden gem is one of our favorite spots for engagement photos. It’s rarely crowded, parking is easy and free and their permit fee is very reasonable at only $20 + $5/person for admission. From Spring through Fall, the gardens burst with beautiful colors and luscious greenery. The well-paved trails wind over little bridges, around a pond and through a Japanese Zen Garden, providing you with a variety of different looks for your photos. HOT TIP: The trees lining the pond are actually Cherry Blossoms and explode with soft pink and white petals in early spring. No need to fight the crowds down by the Tidal Basin when you can have a piece of your own Cherry Blossom heaven all to yourself!

Great Falls State Park

Leave your stilettos at home. For nature lovers, hikers, and outdoorsy couples, nothing beats Great Falls State Park for your engagement photos. The serene setting is located a mere 35 minutes from bustling DC, yet feels worlds away. Visit after a good, hearty rain and you’re bound to catch some pretty breathtaking engagement images with the waterfalls. We recommend the Virginia side for sunrise and the Maryland side for sunset.

Winery or Brewery

The surrounding DC area is home to many award winning wineries and breweries, many with killer views. Celebrate your engagement with some tasty beverages while relaxing and taking beautiful photos. So buckle in, head out west towards Loudoun and Faquier counties for some of the most spectacular engagement session views. A few of our favorites are Stone Tower Winery, Barborsville Winery, Bluemont Vineyard, Barrel Oak Winery Bear Chase Brewery and Dirt Farm Brewery.

Old Town Alexandria

The historic downtown area of Alexandria is home to some of the cutest backdrops for your engagement photos. Meet on King Street and head a few blocks in any direction to be transformed back a couple hundred years. Wind your way down to the waterfront for some sunset photos. Finish your session back in the center of King Street for some nighttime portraits at the fountain. Old Town truly provides a variety in your photos, all within walking distance.

Where you had your first date

Here’s where you can think outside the box for your engagement session and personalize it. From the place you met to where you shared your first kiss, certain places in the city probably hold special meaning to the two of you. We love going back with you to these personal spots and creating engagement photos that really speak to your heart.

Your Home

Look no further than your front stoop for one of the best locations to take engagement photos at. You’ve made so many memories together at your home – why not add one more? Furry friends can participate in the portrait session as well!

The Monuments

Yes. The DC monuments made our list. And while it seems EVERYONE is doing their engagement photos at the monuments, there’s a reason. From dreamy sunrise engagement photos to dramatic sunset portraits, the monuments are extremely photogenic. Just be aware of a few things. First, there is a permit and it’s one of the most expensive ones out there. Second, if it’s summertime at sunset, it will be crowded. Possibly consider sunrise instead when you’ll have the place mostly to yourself! We love finding interesting and unique ways to capture the monuments, giving our couples truly unique engagement photos from a popular spot.

National Gallery of Art

Perfect for those rainy days, the National Gallery of Art offers stunning architecture and great light for your engagement photos. We love the leading lines of the staircase in the atrium and the bright white marble. A fun, colorful dress truly makes your engagement photos pop against this backdrop. Don’t miss the electric light tunnel that connects the East and West Wings of the gallery!

See more of a session in downtown Leesburg

About 45 minutes outside of the city lies a little hidden gem of a town. Downtown Leesburg boosts some awesome spots for your engagement session, offering a mix of urban and rural locations all within a short walks distance of each other. Are you and your significant other craft beer drinkers? Why not have a few photos taken at one of the many local breweries in the downtown area? Do you love the outdoors? Leesburg sits directly on the path of the W&OD trail. Love history? The adorable and historic houses offer great color for your portraits. The possibilities are endless.
